When Kylie Hatfield and Linc Counter first met, each found the other annoying, impossible and utterly attractive. Brought together at the office of Linc's veterinary where Kylie had brought a rambunctious dog she had found injured, they had nothing in common. Linc was totally organized - a Search and Rescue member and canine trainer. On the other hand, Kylie was flighty, the new office assistant to a local Private Investigator.The task of training the girl and her oversized, zany dog fell to Linc by default. He was, after all the best trainer in Asheville. The pair mixed as well as oil and water, but Julie's knack for trouble soon brought out the rescuer in Linc. A few life saving events and the two realized their weird connection may have a more personal component.Throughout the series, Stone and Cross, capture the read not only in the mysteries but also in the romance. I decided to read the full series (5 books) before writing my review because I love Mary Stone books and was interested to see how the full series panned out.Unfortunately, I am giving the full series 2 stars because the main character and plot lines were hard to get behind. I thought Kylie’s character would mature as the series went on, but the only glimpse of maturity was at the very end of the book, I’m talking the last 3 chapters.Private investigators as main characters are a hard sell for me because outside of police contacts, they can only legally go so far. But Kylie didn’t do anything to protect herself from any type of danger and just went charging into every situation “hoping” for the best. Which meant she was always hoping that her husband, the dogs, or the police would save her, but she never saved herself.It was the opposite of these power female leads that Mary Stone typically writes about so it was disheartening that Kylie didn’t mature at all. And as powerful as Linc is, he always bended to her commands, which was eye rolling worthy. The fact that this power ex-military man would constantly give in to a grown woman who acted like a spoiled brat, was hard to read over and over again.I love Mary Stone, but the partnership for this series fell incredibly flat.
